Love to celebrate. Hate waste

Food waste is a big problem.

Many of us celebrate the holidays with barbeques and delicious meals – but not all this food gets eaten and it can end up in landfill. Save food (and money) this holiday season with these easy tips, so together we can love food and hate waste.

Love a meal plan

While planning for big holiday meals, we tend to overlook what we already have in our pantry, fridge, and freezer. Check to see what you already have on hand and start your menu planning from there.

Plan portions appropriately. Be realistic about how much food you’ll really need and try to prepare only what you and your guests will eat.

Love to host – graze it slowly

Grazing tables and large platters look divine at the start but less so by the end of an evening. Start your grazing plate small and refresh if needed, keeping the platter looking great and extras stored safely in the fridge and pantry.

We often enjoy outdoor celebrations in the summertime. This calls for extra caution as food can spoil quickly when left sitting outdoors.

Store your leftovers safely and get them into the fridge within two hours.

Love to share – spread the joy

Share leftovers with guests in re-usable containers by asking them to bring containers.

Keep the joy going and share extra produce and unwanted gifts in your local community – a great way to get to know your neighbours and contribute to the sharing economy!

Love to holiday – trim waste and add more to your beach budget

Food waste at home when going on a  holiday is a big thing. Why not try to eat your fresh food stocks before you leave, pack an esky to take some fresh food with you, share excess produce with your neighbours before you set off for your trip or simply cut it up and freeze ready for a meal when you get back.

It’s fun to be spontaneous on holidays too, so it helps to not over purchase food for the holiday house and keep meal plans flexible for changing plans on the go.
